The University of Virginia invites nominations and applications for the position of Vice Provost for International Affairs. Located in Charlottesville, VA, the University of Virginia is one of the leading research universities in the United States. The Vice Provost for International Affairs will provide
strategic and visionary leadership in shaping the University’s international
profile and implementing an ambitious, University-wide international agenda.
Reporting directly to the Executive Vice President and Provost, the Vice
Provost for International Affairs will work with the President, Provost, the
deans of the University’s College of Arts and Sciences and ten other schools,
other senior administrators, faculty, and students to identify and leverage
opportunities to strengthen the University’s international activities,
visibility, and impact. The Vice
Provost will help develop and lead University-wide international initiatives and
institutional partnerships that foster multidisciplinary collaboration and
maximize resources across the College and schools through activities both at the
University and around the world.0
Building upon the University’s
commitment to excellence in teaching and research, the Vice Provost will help to
expand, strengthen, and integrate international perspectives in undergraduate
and graduate curricula; attract and facilitate the integration of international
students, faculty, and staff into the University community; increase and enhance
opportunities for students, faculty, and staff to study, research, teach, and
provide public service outside the United States; and generate resources to
support the University’s international agenda.
All of these activities build on a burgeoning
interest among students and faculty in global issues and programs, and they will
embody the University’s extraordinary commitment to high academic standards.
The Vice Provost currently oversees the University’s
International Studies Office, which is responsible for the University’s
International Center, study abroad programs, and international student services.
Qualifications: Although
the University will consider a wide range of profiles, candidates for the
position will hold a PhD or other appropriate terminal degree, as well as a
record of distinguished scholarship or intellectual leadership warranting tenure
at the rank of professor.
Preference will be given to candidates who have a
deep interest in public university environments and demonstrate a strong ability
to foster collaboration across the university community.
A track record of strategic, innovative leadership,
enthusiasm and aptitude for fundraising, and shepherding major projects to
successful completion is essential.
International experience beyond academia in the
private sector, nongovernmental sector, or government service is highly
desirable, as is significant experience living and working in more than one
region of the world.
The successful candidate will possess strong
representation, diplomatic, and negotiation skills and a record of
accomplishment in shaping inter-institutional collaborations.
Broad international knowledge, interests, and
cultural fluency are critical.
The ability to speak another language in addition to
English is highly desirable.
Demonstrated
commitment to fostering an institutional environment that values the balance
among the teaching, research, and service missions of the University and
diversity in all aspects of university life is essential.
