Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music
National University of Singapore
The Yong Siew Toh
Conservatory of Music at the National University of Singapore invites
nominations and applications for the position of Deputy Director.
Yong Siew Toh Conservatory
of Music
Established in 2001 through an agreement between the National University of
Singapore (NUS) and the Peabody
Institute of The Johns Hopkins University, Yong Siew Toh is an autonomous school
within the University and Singapore’s first conservatory. The school opened its
doors to its first class of seventy
undergraduates in 2003, and in five short years has established a
reputation as one of the leading conservatories in Asia.
Currently, 200 of Asia’s most talented young musicians come to the Conservatory
from fourteen different countries, including China, Thailand, Vietnam, and
Malaysia, as well as Singapore. Full scholarships (including fees and living
support) are provided to all admitted students.
The Conservatory offers
a four-year, full-time undergraduate Bachelor of Music degree programme,
originally based on the curriculum of the Peabody Institute, with a strong focus
on music performance and music academics. All classes are conducted in English
by an energetic and talented faculty. Students
major in Performance (Piano and Orchestral Instruments) or Composition.
The Deputy Director
will serve as second-in-command to the Director and will support the
Conservatory’s educational mission and distinctive academic culture, assist its
representation and advocacy to university administration, and provide counsel
and leadership in support of the Conservatory’s strategic vision and fundraising
efforts.
Candidates should possess scholarly credentials that command the respect of the
faculty and the University
community, experience with and understanding of performance environments,
demonstrated management and administrative skills, and the ability to identify
and implement new opportunities for collaboration and development both within
NUS and externally. A deep knowledge of the major issues facing professional
music education and training in the 21st century is also important.
A commitment to academic and artistic excellence is critical.
Experience working with students from Asia is highly desirable.
